A 46-year-old woman arrested at London's Gatwick Airport on Tuesday has agreed to be extradited to Greece over her alleged role in the 2010 Marfin bank fire that killed three people. She appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court Wednesday and signed a binding letter of consent, meaning she cannot reverse her decision. She is expected to be returned to Greece within 10 days and will remain in custody until then.
Greek authorities had an outstanding arrest warrant against her. According to SKAI's London correspondent Yannis Chaniotakis, the letter she signed is legally binding and forecloses any appeal against the extradition. She had been living permanently in the United Kingdom for at least the past seven years, with addresses linked to Brighton and London.
She was reportedly working at Gatwick Airport and was also active in photography. Her arrest came when she apparently passed through the airport, where Greek and British authorities were able to detain her.
The Marfin arson attack took place on May 5, 2010, during a massive general strike in Athens tied to the country's first austerity package. Protesters firebombed the Marfin Bank branch on Stadiou Street. Three employees burned to death inside, including a pregnant woman, after being trapped on the upper floors with no means of escape.
Meanwhile, two other suspects, both 42 years old, appeared before an examining magistrate in Athens Wednesday morning. Both men face charges of premeditated serial murder and deny the allegations. Their lawyers argue that the key evidence in the case rests on an anonymous email that triggered the investigation and forensic police reports that, according to the defense, do not conclusively identify the individuals shown in photos and video footage from the attack. Supporters of the accused gathered outside the examining magistrate's offices and chanted slogans in their defense.
