A small family business from Ilia, in the western Peloponnese, has just claimed the top spot in the Olive Oil Times World Ranking. The company is called The Master Miller, founded in 1989 by Giorgos Papadopoulos, and it now holds more than 700 international awards from the world's top olive oil competitions. Last year alone, the company won 10 gold medals at the NYIOOC, the New York International Olive Oil Competition, the most prestigious contest in the industry. According to the organizers themselves, no producer had ever won 10 gold medals in a single year in the competition's history. Konstantinos Papadopoulos, son of the founder and now involved in running the business, said the ranking means something specific to him. Getting to the top once is possible for anyone with a good harvest, he explained, but staying there consistently across multiple years and across many different products is the real measure of quality. The company's approach goes beyond the mill itself. Papadopoulos described a production philosophy that starts in the grove, covering when and how trees are cultivated, when olives are harvested, how the fruit is transported, how it's pressed, stored, tested, and finally delivered to the consumer. He was also direct about a wider problem in the Greek olive oil sector. Greece produces exceptional oil with real regional identity and centuries of agricultural knowledge behind it, but much of it still moves as bulk commodity rather than branded product. International buyers, he said, want traceability, batch consistency, lab analysis, and the guarantee that what they buy today will be available at the same quality next month. Papadopoulos said The Master Miller wants to act as a cooperative framework for Greek producers, mills, packagers, and exporters, creating shared quality standards rather than competing in isolation.
