A wooden Orthodox icon of the Crucifixion was found floating in shallow water near Mount Athos and pulled ashore by a Greek man who captured the discovery on video.
The icon, which features a golden background and Byzantine-style imagery of Christ on the Cross surrounded by figures from the Crucifixion scene, was partially submerged near a pebbled beach when it was spotted and retrieved. The footage, shared by Instagram account @yiannos.dem, shows the icon being lifted from the water and held up for the camera.
No verified information exists on the icon's age, its origin, who it belonged to, or how it ended up in the sea. Mount Athos, the monastic peninsula in northern Greece, is one of the most sacred sites in Eastern Orthodox Christianity and has been a center of Byzantine religious art and iconography for centuries.
How the icon reached the water remains unknown.
