A deal Greece called a blueprint for getting the Parthenon Marbles back is now under legal fire in Italy, and Athens could be forced to return the ancient artifact it already has. The "Fagan Fragment," a 2,500-year-old piece of Parthenon sculpture depicting Artemis, was transferred from a museum in Palermo to Athens' Acropolis Museum in 2022 under a "permanent deposit" arrangement. Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni declared it "paves a clear and moral way for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Athens," and Greece celebrated it as a model for how the British Museum could eventually do the same without technically breaching UK law. Now a sealed civil complaint, known in Italy as an "esposto," has been filed asking Italian courts to review the transfer. The complaint was lodged by Dr. Mario Trabucco della Torretta, a UK-based archaeologist and vocal opponent of any Parthenon Marbles deal, and targets how Sicily's regional government handled what is classified as public cultural property. The Italian Court of Audit has been asked to determine whether Sicily ever actually transferred ownership of the fragment, which was valued at 2.5 million euros in one export document. If the court finds ownership was never properly transferred, or that the permanent export was improperly authorized, Italian authorities may be legally obligated to recover it. The case could be referred to the Italian culture ministry and the Carabinieri's heritage protection unit. The complaint makes no criminal allegations and does not accuse Greece or the Acropolis Museum of any wrongdoing. The fragment is believed to have been taken from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin himself and passed to diplomat Robert Fagan, whose widow deposited it in Palermo in the early 19th century. The "permanent deposit" model was widely seen as the most realistic legal pathway for the British Museum to return the Marbles without Greece accepting a formal loan. That pathway now has a serious question mark over it. #ParthenonMarbles #Greece #ElginMarbles
