A 19-year-old Greek American from Palatine, Illinois, has been charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons after police uncovered an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in suburban Chicago.
Alexandros Paporakis was arrested Sunday after a co-worker at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights tipped off police. The co-worker had received a video of an AR-style rifle and a photo of Paporakis in a tactical vest, which prompted the alert.
When authorities searched the home, they found the rifle, roughly 300 rounds of ammunition, and tactical gear. Court documents say Paporakis also wrote an eight-page manifesto describing himself as a white supremacist and neo-Nazi, and stating he intended to kill as many people from minority communities as possible, with people of Indian descent specifically targeted.
Prosecutors say he had been planning an attack for approximately two years. Palatine police believe the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Aurora, one of the largest Hindu temples in the area, was the likely target. According to earlier reports, Paporakis drove to the temple on Sunday while thousands of worshippers were gathered for the first day of Navaratri, but his AR-15 reportedly jammed and he left.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who represents the Illinois district and was inside the temple that same afternoon, said he had no idea there was an alleged attacker outside. He called on the FBI to prosecute the case as a hate crime.
Former DHS intelligence official John Cohen told ABC7 that swift action by local law enforcement likely prevented another mass casualty event in the United States. Paporakis appeared in court Wednesday and was ordered held in custody. The investigation remains ongoing.
