Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of India's Congress Parliamentary Party, made her debut on X this week with a video recalling how her love story with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi started in 1965 at a small Greek restaurant called The Varsity in Cambridge, England.
"In a small Greek restaurant in Cambridge, my journey of love began. Rajiv and I created a world filled with love, laughter and memories," she wrote in the post. The video was accompanied by old photographs from the early days of their relationship.
Sonia described how finding decent food in England at the time was difficult, and that she eventually discovered a Greek restaurant popular with Indian and Italian students. It was there that a mutual friend introduced her to Rajiv. "When I first met him, I felt almost immediately that he was someone I would really love to be with," she recalled.
She said it was his gentleness, more than his looks, that stayed with her. "He was a very gentle-looking person. Of course he was very good-looking, but that gentleness came through. That was something that really touched me," she said.
The post promotes her upcoming memoir, "Belonging: A Journey of Love," a 544-page book published globally by Alfred A. Knopf and by HarperCollins in India. It traces her life from post-war Italy through her relationship with Rajiv Gandhi, the assassinations of both Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, and her later role in Indian politics. The book is out November 10, with pre-orders already open.
