Greek shipowners went on one of their biggest ordering sprees in years, commissioning 115 confirmed new vessels between March and the end of May 2026, a number that climbs to 133 ships when options are included. The surge spans every major shipping segment, from crude tankers and containerships to bulk carriers and gas carriers. Research firm Allied QuantumSea says this is not a one-sector spike but a broad fleet renewal and expansion campaign.
Tankers led the charge with 40 orders, triggered in part by the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz reigniting energy security concerns. Containerships came second with 38 orders, bulk carriers added 25, and gas carriers accounted for 12. The vessel types range from VLCCs and Suezmaxes to LNG carriers, VLGCs, and everything from Ultramax to Newcastlemax bulkers.
Several of Greece's biggest names drove the numbers. Dynacom Tankers, owned by George Prokopiou, ordered four additional VLCCs, continuing his fleet's rapid expansion. Maran Tankers, controlled by Maria Angelicoussis, signed contracts for three VLCCs at roughly $129 million each. Arcadia Shipmanagement, owned by George and Panagiotis Angelopoulos, ordered two Suezmax tankers at South Korea's HD Hyundai Samho at around $89 million apiece, with deliveries set for 2029.
Performance Shipping, led by Aliki Paliou and Andreas Michalopoulos, contracted two 158,000 dwt Suezmax tankers in China at $81.5 million each, due in 2028 and 2029. Byron Vassiliadis, through Venergy Maritime, signed a letter of intent for two more Suezmaxes at $82 million each, with options for two additional hulls. Chandris Hellas, owned by Giannis and Michalis Chandris, ordered two Suezmaxes at $83 million each from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. Golden Energy Management, owned by Victor Restis, added one Suezmax in South Korea at $89.5 million, and Laskaridis Shipping secured a further Suezmax at the same yard for delivery in Q2 2029.
