Victoria Hislop's new novel "The Wine-Dark Sea" has landed on the Times bestseller lists in the UK, and the story behind it is as harrowing as the history it uncovers. The book, set against the backdrop of Greece's Civil War, follows families torn apart as children were stripped from their mothers and sent to institutions, communist countries, or sold outright to strangers abroad. The Greek edition, titled "Skoteino Pelagos," is due from Psychogios on November 5.
Hislop, who holds honorary Greek citizenship, spent nearly four years researching the book. She visited Makronisos, saw sites in Chios where female political prisoners were held, and traveled to the Hungarian village of Beloiannisz, where displaced Greek children had been resettled. She also drew heavily on the scholarship of Gonda Van Steen, holder of the Koraes Chair at King's College London, whose research documented thousands of cases of Greek children placed with childless couples in the United States and the Netherlands.
The numbers she uncovered stunned British readers at her book events. Thousands of children were taken to communist countries like Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Romania in the late 1940s, and many never returned. But the detail that shocked audiences most was this: around 4,000 Greek children were sold to American couples through networks of intermediaries, given new names and new identities, and raised as Americans with no knowledge of what had happened to them.
Hislop was deliberate about not taking political sides. She said she resists a left or right view because she knows atrocities were committed on both sides of the conflict, and explores those decisions through her characters rather than through ideology. The Times reviewer Andrew Billen called the book "a harrowing, educative, rewarding story," adding that he read its final pages through tears. Hislop said that single sentence made four years of work feel worthwhile.
