Christopher Nolan's Odyssey film has put Homer back at the center of global conversation, but one of the epic's most devastating moments involves no monsters, no gods, and no battles. It's a dog. Argos, Odysseus's faithful hound, spends 20 years waiting for his master to return from Troy. When Odysseus finally arrives home in disguise, Argos recognizes him immediately, lifts his ears, wags his tail, and dies. He held on just long enough to see him. Odysseus can't acknowledge the dog without blowing his cover. He's surrounded by the suitors competing for Penelope, men who would kill him on the spot if they knew who he was. So he walks past, holds it together, and loses the one creature that never stopped believing he was coming home. Classics professors Suzanna Philipp and Sally Wait, writing in The Conversation, point out that Homer frames the Argos scene with sharp irony. Earlier in Book 14, Eumaeus's guard dogs fail to recognize Odysseus at all and nearly attack him. Those same dogs welcome his son Telemachus warmly. The contrast is deliberate. Twenty years away has made Odysseus a stranger to almost everyone. Homer layers the scene further by placing Argos on a dung heap, riddled with fleas, a shadow of the powerful hunting dog he once was. The reunion everyone waited for happens, and then it can't. This isn't the only moment of human-animal tenderness in the epics. Penelope keeps pet geese and weeps for them in a dream when an eagle kills them. In the Iliad, Hector calls his chariot horses to remember the sweet porridge his wife used to feed them. Achilles's horses weep when Patroclus is killed. Even the Cyclops, the cannibal monster, calls his favorite ram "pepon," a term of endearment used for close friends and family. Homer's world is full of gods and heroes, but it keeps returning to ordinary bonds.
