Greece has officially upgraded the Kerameikos archaeological site, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurating the project as part of a plan to connect Athens' major ancient monuments into a single continuous walking route for tourists and residents. The route now links Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Acropolis, and the ancient Agora before ending at Kerameikos itself. Thucydides once called Kerameikos Athens' most beautiful suburb, and the site holds the public burial ground where Pericles delivered his famous funeral oration honoring soldiers who died for the city. Mitsotakis drew a direct line between that ancient speech and today, saying Pericles' words feel increasingly relevant as democracy faces pressure from multiple directions. The funding came primarily through Greece's Recovery and Resilience Fund, and Mitsotakis noted that all projects under the fund were completed on schedule with no allocated money lost. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni oversaw roughly 350 million euros spread across more than 100 separate cultural projects throughout Attica. Mitsotakis credited that investment with reshaping how international visitors see Athens, saying the city is now a destination in its own right rather than just a transit stop before tourists head to the islands. Visitor numbers to Athens have risen over the past year, and officials say the newly connected monument network is a key part of that shift.
