A Bangladeshi migrant has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of Anastazja Rubińska, a 27-year-old Polish woman who traveled to the Greek island of Kos in 2023 for seasonal tourism work.
Rubińska, originally from Wrocław, went missing after a night out during a day off from her hotel job. She had texted her boyfriend asking him to pick her up because she felt unsafe, then sent a follow-up message saying everything was fine and that someone would drive her home. She never came back.
Her body was found roughly a week later, about a kilometer from the suspect's home. The cause of death was asphyxiation, and there were signs of sexual assault.
The man convicted, identified as Salahuddin S., 32, was found with a shirt bearing the victim's blood and hair at his residence. He was also covered in scratches at the time of his arrest. Despite initially confessing to sexual assault, he later changed his story, claiming Rubińska had come to his home to buy hashish and denying intercourse.
Greek police reported that his phone search history from the night of the murder included searches for how to confuse police, how to remove fingerprints from a body, and how to make a corpse impossible to identify.
The case drew significant attention across both Greece and Poland. Polish authorities had opened a parallel investigation and politicians called for extradition, though EU law made that outcome effectively impossible since the crime occurred on Greek soil. The trial proceeded in Greece, ending in a life sentence.
Rubińska had gone to Kos, like thousands of young Europeans each summer, to pick up seasonal work in one of Greece's busiest tourist destinations. She was 27 years old.
