Christopher Nolan's Odyssey has done something no classical scholar managed to pull off. In the four weeks after the film opened in mid-July, UK sales of Homer's Odyssey jumped 1,400% compared to the same period last year, according to NielsenIQ data. The ripple effect is large enough to push British poetry sales toward an all-time record. Poetry book sales topped £8 million in the first 30 weeks of 2026, up 13.3% on last year. The category is now projected to cross £15 million in annual sales for the first time since reliable data exists, and could potentially reach £17 million if current momentum holds. Homer is carrying a significant share of that. UK sales of the Odyssey and the Iliad combined have brought in nearly £980,000 this year, accounting for roughly £1.20 of every £10 spent on poetry in Britain. The film, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway, opened to $264 million globally, the biggest opening weekend of Nolan's career. The book-buying surge has now made the story bigger than a box office milestone. The effect is not limited to the UK. US print sales of all editions of the Odyssey are up 76% since the start of the year, per Circana BookScan. One of the biggest beneficiaries is Emily Wilson's translation. Wilson became widely known as the first woman to publish a complete English translation of the Odyssey. There is a notable irony here. Wilson has been one of the film's sharpest critics, writing in the London Review of Books that it lacks psychological, emotional, political, and moral depth. Her edition is selling well regardless.
