The European Parliament's full plenary session in Strasbourg will debate Turkish escalation against Greece and Cyprus next Thursday, following a push by Greece's New Democracy MEPs backed by the European People's Party.
The session has been formally placed on the agenda under the title "Escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean as a result of ongoing Turkish provocations." Greek and Cypriot MEPs had already been calling for the debate through a series of parliamentary interventions.
Eliza Vozemberg, head of the New Democracy delegation in the European Parliament, confirmed the initiative was brought forward with the direct support of EPP President Manfred Weber, who leads the largest political group in the EU legislature. Weber's backing gives the debate significant institutional weight.
Vozemberg stated that all Greek and Cypriot MEPs are aligned on the issue, describing Turkey's revisionist policy as consistent and escalating in line with its own interests. She framed the debate as a demand, not a request, saying Greek and Cypriot MEPs are pushing for a clear declaration that an attack on Greece constitutes an attack on the entire European family.
The debate comes after the European Parliament issued a critical report in June that referenced violations of Greek sovereignty and Turkey's so-called "Blue Homeland" doctrine, which claims vast stretches of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean as Turkish maritime territory.
Thursday's plenary session is expected to give MEPs from across the bloc a fresh opportunity to formally respond to the latest developments in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
