Greece is sending a scientific mission to Venezuela to assist regions hit by two major earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. The mission is being carried out under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, an international agreement on managing natural disaster risk. Among those participating is Efthymis Lekkas, Emeritus Professor at the University of Athens and President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation of Greece. The team will fly into Valencia Airport, which remains operational, and then deploy across the broader Caracas region as well as the cities of Valencia, Caraballeda, Catia La Mar, and La Guaira. Their work will include on-site inspections, scientific field recordings, and technical assessments of infrastructure and structural damage caused by the quakes. The mission's goals cover the full scope of post-earthquake assessment, from mapping the geodynamic and seismotectonic conditions of the affected zone to evaluating environmental impact and providing direct scientific and humanitarian support to local authorities. Greece has significant institutional expertise in earthquake preparedness and response, given the country's position in one of Europe's most seismically active zones. This deployment puts that knowledge to use on an international scale, with Greek scientists working directly in the field alongside local Venezuelan officials. #Greece #Venezuela #Earthquake
