Germany's Left Party is demanding that Berlin accept migrants from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, as the crisis there continues to unfold. Faction deputy Clara Bünger said Germany and the EU are obligated to help with aid and to take in those seeking protection. She argued that higher walls don't stop people, they only make the crossing deadlier. Bünger, who serves as the Bundestag's interior and migration policy spokesperson for the Left faction, said what is happening in Ceuta is not a natural disaster but the result of political decisions. She said people are fleeing war, poverty, and climate crisis, and that sealing off borders has not solved anything. As long as no safe and legal pathways exist, she said, people will continue to be put in mortal danger. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU used the Ceuta situation to announce an extension of German border controls, saying the progress made in pushing back illegal migration must be preserved and expanded. Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU had also instructed the Spanish government to return the migrants who entered to Morocco. According to Spanish authorities, around 60,000 people reached Ceuta from Morocco in recent days, with 34 confirmed dead. About 25,000 of them returned to Morocco, Spain's Interior Ministry said. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the situation an "attack" on his country's territorial integrity and blamed organized smuggling networks for spreading rumors that triggered the mass crossing. #Ceuta #Immigration #Europe
