A former senior officer in Israel's elite Unit 504 military intelligence unit is urging Greece to take the prospect of military conflict with Turkey seriously. Marco Moreno, who served in one of the IDF's most specialized clandestine intelligence services, gave an exclusive interview to Proto Thema delivering a stark message to Athens: "Prepare for war with Turkey."
Unit 504 operates under Israel's Directorate of Military Intelligence and focuses on gathering human intelligence beyond Israel's borders, with operations concentrated in Lebanon, Syria, and the Palestinian territories. Moreno spent years inside that world, building intelligence networks and running operations in some of the region's most volatile theaters. His assessment of Turkey as a genuine threat to Greek security comes from that experience.
His warning was blunt. Describing Greeks as a brave people, Moreno said early preparation is essential and summed up his outlook with three words: "Winter is coming." He stopped short of predicting a specific conflict, but his message was clear, Greece cannot afford to treat a military confrontation with Turkey as an abstract possibility.
The interview comes against a backdrop of sharply deteriorating Greek-Turkish relations. Ankara has been escalating its demands for the demilitarization of Greek islands, linking those demands to its broader regional rivalry and its hostility toward the Greece-Israel strategic partnership. Turkish officials have also warned Athens against deepening defense cooperation with Israel, framing it as a destabilizing move.
Moreno's warning reflects an assessment shared by many in the regional security community, that Turkey's posture toward Greece is not rhetorical, and Athens needs to plan accordingly. His views are his own and do not represent the position of the Israeli government or military.
