The Greek island of Andros has launched what's being called the first AI travel guide built specifically for a destination in Greece. The tool, named Andros AI, lets visitors and locals ask questions and get instant answers about the island, covering accommodation, beaches, transport, food, and sightseeing.
Ioannis Pitakidis, founder of andros-guide.gr and the company Hype², told Euronews the service works like a chat tool where anyone can ask anything about the island, whether they're already there or just planning a trip. He said the goal is to give users reliable, verified information without the usual cycle of phone calls, emails, and web searches.
Pitakidis also made a broader prediction, saying AI will fundamentally change how tourism works worldwide, and that Greece, as a country whose economy depends heavily on tourism, will have to adopt this kind of technology to stay competitive.
Andros is the northernmost island in the Cyclades and the second largest after Naxos. It's known for its shipping heritage, neoclassical architecture in the island's main town, and unusually lush landscape fed by natural springs, which sets it apart from the typical bare-rock image of the Cyclades.
The neoclassical mansions that define the Chora were built roughly 130 to 140 years ago, mostly funded by the island's powerful shipping families. The Goularidis and Embiricos families left a particularly strong mark, with the Embiricos family financing the central square, a hospital, and a care home that were designed to give the town the feel of a fully developed city.
Whether Andros AI becomes a model for other Greek islands remains to be seen, but Pitakidis said he believes other popular destinations will follow suit quickly.
