The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) has activated ICARUS, a new supercomputer that delivers over 2 PetaFLOPS of computing power, making it the most powerful supercomputing system at any Greek university and one of the strongest at any university across Europe. ICARUS runs on 24 computing nodes, each equipped with two NVIDIA Grace Hopper GH200 Superchips, giving the system 48 combined CPU-GPU units. That kind of raw processing power puts NTUA in the same conversation as the continent's top research institutions for AI model training, large-scale scientific simulations, climate and energy modeling, and big data analysis. The system was funded through Greece's "Universities of Excellence" program under the Ministry of Education. NTUA Rector Yannis Chatzigeorgiou said the university is investing in research and innovation to cement its position as the country's leading research institution, and that ICARUS will push its researchers to the cutting edge of scientific work for years to come. Alongside ICARUS, NTUA also launched a private cloud infrastructure built on the open-source OpenStack platform. The cloud gives faculty, researchers, and students shared computing resources, including virtual machines, storage, and networking services, without each lab needing to buy and maintain its own physical hardware. The two systems are designed to work together. The cloud handles application development and hosting, while ICARUS takes on the most computationally demanding tasks. A single research team can now run an entire project cycle, from building an AI model to executing a massive simulation, through one centralized infrastructure. #Greece #AI #Technology
