The United States has approved the potential sale of Switchblade 300 Block 20 loitering munitions to Greece under the Foreign Military Sales program, with an estimated cost of $80.1 million, according to Reuters. The State Department signed off on the deal, which covers the upgraded version of the system manufactured by American defense company AeroVironment.
The Switchblade 300 is a small unmanned aircraft that carries an explosive warhead and is guided to its target by an operator, who can select or abort the strike at the last moment. These so-called "kamikaze drones" fall into the category of loitering munitions, weapons that circle an area before diving into a target on command.
The approval comes roughly two years after Greece's Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense gave the green light to procure both Switchblade 300 and Switchblade 600 systems as part of a broader effort to strengthen the capabilities of the Hellenic Armed Forces. The Block 20 is an upgraded iteration of that original procurement plan.
Switchblade systems have become a staple of modern warfare, seeing widespread use in Ukraine, the Caucasus, and conflicts across the Middle East and Africa. Their ability to loiter over a battlefield and strike with precision has made them one of the most sought-after tactical weapons of the past several years.
Greece joins a growing list of US allies equipped with the AeroVironment platform, adding a significant precision-strike capability to its ground and combined-arms operations.
