A heated exchange in the Greek parliament on Monday turned into a full confrontation between minister Adonis Georgiadis and opposition leader Zoe Konstantopoulou over Greece's relationship with Israel.
Konstantopoulou, who leads Plefsi Eleftherias, questioned Georgiadis about his attendance at an Israel Allies Foundation event held at the Athens Club on October 12. The event was reported on October 15 by Reporters United. She described it as an insult to Greeks that a serving minister and ruling-party vice-president had met "secretly" with what she called "factors of international Zionism," and asked whether he had informed the prime minister or the Speaker of parliament.
Georgiadis flatly denied any secrecy. He pointed out that the event took place in central Athens with more than 200 guests, and said that as a sitting MP he does not need anyone's permission to attend a public function.
He went on to defend the Greece-Israel relationship as a strategic one that has spanned multiple governments, from Papandreou in 2010 through Samaras, Tsipras, and Mitsotakis. He noted that Israel has officially condemned Turkey's occupation of Cyprus and the Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum, calling Israel "our greatest ally in the eastern Mediterranean." Then he turned it back on Konstantopoulou directly: "You call me a fascist. You who oppose the country's relationship with this state, aren't you a traitor to Greece?"
Konstantopoulou had earlier called Georgiadis a "fascist and far-right, Holocaust denier" and described Netanyahu as an international criminal subject to an ICC arrest warrant. She also said she would pursue the matter against him "criminally." Georgiadis responded: "Did you threaten that you will put me in prison? Who do you think you are?"
The exchange reflects a deepening divide in Greek politics over the country's ties with Israel, particularly since the Gaza conflict intensified.
