A Ryanair flight departing Thessaloniki for Memmingen, Germany on Friday morning turned into a nightmare when an engine failure sent debris crashing through a cabin window shortly after takeoff, causing sudden decompression that partially sucked a 60-year-old Serbian passenger out of the aircraft.
The man was saved by his seatbelt and the quick hands of passengers around him. His wife described the moment to Greek broadcaster MEGA: the window shattered, half his body was pulled outside, his shirt came off, oxygen masks dropped, and passengers around him were screaming and crying. Two fellow passengers grabbed him and held on while a third reached across from an adjacent seat to grip his hand, with his upper body still hanging outside the plane.
Eyewitnesses said it all began with a loud bang from the engine, like a tire blowout but far more violent, followed immediately by the loss of cabin pressure. The man had been pulled almost to his shoulders through the window opening before other passengers managed to restrain him. Footage obtained by MEGA showed the broken window crudely blocked with a piece of luggage, the injured man slumped in his seat.
The pilot immediately turned the aircraft around and landed safely back at Macedonia Airport in Thessaloniki. Ryanair confirmed the incident in an official statement, describing the window as having "detached during flight" and saying all passengers returned to the terminal normally.
After landing, the 60-year-old was rushed to AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki. He is currently hospitalized in severe shock and is being treated for friction burns, with doctors conducting a full clinical examination. Ryanair has not yet commented on the cause of the engine failure or how debris reached the cabin window.
