Giorgos Mazonakis, one of Greece's most recognizable voices in popular music, died Wednesday in Athens after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 54 years old. He was rushed to Elpis Hospital in critical condition, where doctors confirmed his death. The circumstances surrounding the cardiac episode have not been fully disclosed. Mazonakis had been active in Greek music for over 33 years, releasing his debut album "Mesanyhta kai Kati" in 1993 and building one of the most distinctive careers in modern laïko, the urban folk-pop genre that sits at the heart of Greek nightlife culture. Songs like "Savvato," "Zilevo," "Paidi tis Nychtas," and "Ores Mikres" became fixtures at clubs, weddings, and celebrations across Greece for decades. His signature style combined laïko foundations with pop, dance, and electronic production, which helped him stay relevant across multiple generations of Greek music fans. He won Song of the Year at the MAD Video Music Awards in both 2021 and 2022. Earlier this year, Mazonakis had been hospitalized in February with influenza A and underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder. He recovered and returned to public life, making a surprise stage appearance at a festival in Kamena Vourla in July. His death came at a particularly sharp moment. Just hours before news broke Wednesday, a concert announcement had been posted promoting a September 20 performance at Technopolis in Athens to celebrate 33 years of his career. He had also been scheduled to perform at the Alsos Theater on September 30 and October 4. Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Wednesday evening.
