US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Americans are the heirs of Greek and Roman civilization and argues the West has become dangerously apologetic about the very achievements that built it. Speaking to Breitbart News in his first major interview since Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned, Rubio said Western nations had inherited values from Greece, Rome, and Europe that underpinned everything from democratic governance to foreign policy. He said no other civilization in the world was as reluctant to defend its own record, and that this reluctance was now shaping geopolitical outcomes in harmful ways. "The only culture and the only civilization in the world today who seems apologetic about its history and its achievements is the West, and it's having a dramatic impact on foreign policy," Rubio said. The interview took place on October 15 at the State Department, two days after Guilfoyle's departure. Rubio said it was too early to name a replacement ambassador, but made clear Greece would not see a drop in US attention as a result. He called Greece a great ally that had increased its defense spending without needing a push from Washington, something he said few other NATO members could claim. Rubio also singled out Greece as a future energy hub, pointing to its geographic position linking Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He said Greece's openness to energy exploration and its infrastructure for pipelines put it in a strong position to help wean Europe off dependence on adversarial suppliers. "Energy is only as good as your ability to move it," Rubio said. "Greece is in a very advantageous position geographically for energy, as they have been for trade and so many other industries throughout history." The comments follow Rubio's speech at the Acropolis last week, where he told the crowd that Americans stood as a testament to a debt owed to ancient Greece that no passage of time could extinguish. #Greece #USGreece #Rubio
