Greece's riot police are getting 60 new buses, and according to a report by Newsauto.gr, they are being built in Turkey. The vehicles are Mercedes-Benz buses manufactured at facilities run by Mercedes-Benz Türk, a Daimler Truck subsidiary, with production already underway. The Istanbul district of Hoşdere is the company's main bus plant, and the Bursa area has also been mentioned in connection with the order. The buses are intended for the Hellenic Police's riot control units, known as YAT and YMET, which fall under the Police Operations Directorate. Beyond transporting officers, the vehicles will double as rest facilities during extended operations, equipped with air conditioning, seatbelted seating, a sink, refrigerators, and toilets. The order is replacing an aging fleet, some of which dates back to 2003. The Attica Police Officers' Union flagged the problem in June 2026, and the original plan called for roughly 40 new vehicles before being scaled up to 60, still short of the estimated need of 65. Mercedes-Benz Türk is not a Turkish state defense company, but confirmed production in Turkey means part of the economic activity from this contract flows directly into Turkey's industrial base. This is happening at a time when Greece and Turkey remain at odds over sovereignty disputes and competing maritime claims in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Major details about the deal have not been made public. The contractor, the tender process, the total cost, who handles the vehicle conversions, and the delivery schedule are all still unknown. Newsauto.gr broke the story on October 17, but the Greek government has not publicly commented. #Greece #HellenicPolice #Greece Turkey
