A group of roughly 15 protesters showed up to the Kumbara beach area on the island of Ios yesterday afternoon, the 15th of August, blocking a small bridge during one of the busiest days of the Greek summer and sending tourists scrambling.
According to a complaint filed with Newsbeast, a van marked with the "Oikologiki Symmachia" (Ecological Alliance) badge and several private cars pulled up to the bridge connecting the Kumbara area to a small islet just after 3 p.m. The vehicles blocked the road entirely, cutting off pedestrian traffic, while the group unrolled banners and moved through the area dressed in black. Workers at nearby businesses said customers panicked, with many not knowing what was happening. Families with children reportedly left the beach altogether.
The protest lasted around 30 minutes. A witness who has worked on Ios since 2008 told Newsbeast he did not recognize any of the protesters as local residents, and said the group appeared to be connected to the "Save Ios" association. The Oikologiki Symmachia account had posted about the same location exactly one week earlier, on August 8, using the hashtags #Save_Ios and #saveios.
The demonstration targeted a business family whose hospitality group operates in the area and has been involved in repositioning the island toward higher-end tourism. The witness said the businesses support around 80 families who live on Ios year-round, without needing to relocate to Athens for work.
"There was no respect, not for the day, not for the workers," the witness said. He described the protest as damaging to the island's reputation and claimed that not a single local resident was among those demonstrating. He accused the group of acting like "activists-for-hire" and said their goal appeared to be dragging the island backward economically. "A minority thinks only they have environmental conscience," he added. "We live from this island, we care for it, and we want it to thrive."
It is not the first time, according to the report, that this kind of disruption has occurred on Ios during tourist season.
