Greece and the United States signed a Letter of Intent today formalizing military cooperation between the Greek Armed Forces and the Florida National Guard. The signing took place at 12:30 p.m. at the Conrad Athens The Ilisian hotel in Athens.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias attended alongside U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking the highest-level American diplomatic presence at such a bilateral defense agreement in recent memory. The Letter of Intent was signed by General Dimitrios Houpis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, and Brigadier General John Haas, commander of the Florida National Guard.
The State Partnership Program, which pairs U.S. National Guard units with allied nations, has deepened Greece's military ties with the United States at a time when the Eastern Mediterranean remains one of NATO's most contested regions. Florida's National Guard brings significant joint-operations experience from deployments across multiple theaters. The agreement formalizes cooperation across training, exercises, and operational coordination between the two forces.
Rubio's presence at the signing signals that Washington views the Greece partnership as a strategic priority, not a routine administrative arrangement. Dendias has spent the past several years expanding Greece's defense footprint through bilateral agreements with France, Israel, and the United States.
