Platon Antoniou, the Greek-rooted photographer whose portraits have appeared on more than 30 TIME magazine covers, is bringing his first major retrospective to Athens. The exhibition, titled "PEOPLE POWER", opens at the Benaki Museum on November 5, 2026 and runs through January 31, 2027. Platon will open it himself on the evening of November 4.
Over four decades, Platon has shot for The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vogue, TIME and Vanity Fair, and has photographed more world leaders than any photographer in history. His subjects include Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Muammar Gaddafi, Tony Blair, Silvio Berlusconi and Kyriakos Mitsotakis. His signature style puts the camera uncomfortably close, uses wide-angle lenses and controlled lighting on mostly white or black backgrounds, pulling out wrinkles, gaze and micro-expressions that most portrait photographers never capture.
The exhibition at Benaki's Pireos 138 space will run in two sections. The first covers his iconic world leader portraits. The second is a personal collection of photographs from Paros, a tribute to his Greek roots and culture.
A new monograph, "Platon Paros", will be released alongside the show. Platon also founded The People's Portfolio, a non-profit dedicated to highlighting human rights defenders around the world.
On the state of the world his work documents, Platon said people are all here together but divided by tribalism, all here together but misled by mass myths, all here together in a technological ecstasy.
The Benaki Museum is located at Pireos 138, Athens.
