On Wednesday, October 28, archaeological sites and museums across Greece will open their doors free of charge as the country marks its national holiday. The free admission covers all sites and museums under the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development's ticketing system, and the Acropolis Museum in Athens has also confirmed it is among the participating venues.
The Acropolis Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day, with last admission at 7:30 p.m. A single free ticket covers both the exhibition galleries and the ancient Athenian neighborhood excavated beneath the building. Free tickets are issued at the ticket desk on the day, though groups of 16 to 40 people are required to reserve in advance, and the museum notes that a reservation does not guarantee no wait.
October 28 is Oxi Day, commemorating Greece's refusal of Mussolini's ultimatum and its resistance to the Italian invasion in 1940. It is one of the most significant national holidays on the Greek calendar.
Visitors planning to attend should check the official museum and site pages before setting out, as holiday-specific changes to hours or arrangements are possible. For those who miss it or want to return, free entry under the Hellenic Heritage calendar also applies on the first and third Sundays of each month from November through March.
