Greek police arrested two foreign nationals on Saturday, August 8, for smuggling a total of 15 undocumented migrants through the Evros and Rhodope regions of northern Greece. The first suspect was caught in the afternoon transporting eight migrants illegally by car along the Egnatia Highway between Kipoi and Alexandroupolis. Hours later that same evening, a second suspect was stopped on the Egnatia Highway between Komotini and Xanthi, carrying seven undocumented migrants in a separate vehicle. Both suspects were foreign nationals. Police seized their vehicles and mobile phones at the time of arrest, and both were handed over to the relevant prosecutors. The border guard units of Soufli and Iasmos are handling the preliminary investigations into the two separate cases. The Egnatia Highway, which cuts through Thrace parallel to the Turkish border, has become a key route for smuggling networks moving migrants from the Evros crossing points deeper into Greek territory.
