Vangelis Doumas has won the European Championship title in the 100m breaststroke for the second time, claiming gold at just 18 years old. The Olympiacos swimmer finished in 59.91 seconds, ahead of Germany's Louis Hoffmann (1:00.29) and Britain's Max Morgan (1:00.41).
Doumas, who is from Alexandroupolis, holds the Greek record in the 100m breaststroke at 59.77 seconds, set at last year's World Youth and Junior Championships in Otopeni, Romania. That time stands as a national record across three separate categories: senior men, under-23, and junior.
This gold adds to a silver he already picked up in the 200m breaststroke at the same tournament, giving him two medals at this year's European Junior Championships alone. Across all editions of the competition, he now has five European medals total, and has finished on the 100m podium three years in a row, with two golds and one silver.
Fellow Greek swimmer Nikos Papatheodorou also had a strong showing in the 100m backstroke final, finishing sixth with a time of 55.38. The 17-year-old Olympiacos athlete actually turned first at the 50m mark but could not hold his pace in what was a very fast race overall. Russian independent athlete Mikhail Serbakov won with 53.99, edging France's Nathan Muratori by just one hundredth of a second.
