All student parades marking October 28 in the Dodecanese have been cancelled. Minas Papadakis, Civil Protection Coordinator for the South Aegean Region, made the announcement Tuesday, citing a serious risk of flooding across the island group.
Papadakis told ERT that safety was the driving factor behind the decision, with dangerous weather conditions forecast to hit the Dodecanese on Wednesday, Greece's national holiday. A red warning remains in effect for the entire region through October 28.
The Dodecanese are on heightened civil protection alert, with authorities urging residents to take precautions as the storm system moves through. Wednesday's Oxi Day commemorations across the island group will go ahead in other forms, but the street parades are off.
