A Greek professor has cracked the global top tier of artificial intelligence research. Georgios Chalkiadakis, a professor at the Technical University of Crete in Chania, has been ranked in the top 0.27% of AI researchers worldwide by ScholarGPS, one of the most authoritative academic analytics platforms in the world. Out of 268,084 researchers evaluated globally, that is an extraordinary position to hold.
ScholarGPS bases its rankings on scientific publications, research impact, and scholarly contributions, using objective data and international quality benchmarks. Chalkiadakis's work spans artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems, game theory, and decision-making under uncertainty, areas that sit at the cutting edge of how AI systems are designed to reason and cooperate.
Originally from Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi, Crete, Chalkiadakis has built an international research footprint through numerous publications, global collaborations, and academic recognition across borders. His standing in the ScholarGPS list reflects years of sustained, high-impact output rather than a single breakthrough moment.
The achievement also puts the Technical University of Crete on the map in a field dominated by institutions from the United States, China, and Western Europe. TUC has been climbing steadily in international rankings, and having a faculty member in the top 0.27% of a field as competitive as AI is a significant marker of that progress.
Greek public broadcaster ERT reported the ranking in June 2025, drawing attention to what it called a major milestone for Greek academia. The story has resonated widely among Greeks at home and abroad who follow the global standing of Greek science and research.
