Greece ranks first in the entire European Union for work-related stress, depression and anxiety, according to a major new survey by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. Nearly half of all Greek workers, 49%, reported experiencing stress, depression or anxiety caused or made worse by their jobs. The EU average sits at just 29%, a gap that puts Greece in a category of its own.
The survey, called OSH Pulse 2025, was conducted across 25,688 workers in EU member states, including 1,002 in Greece. Finland came second at 45%, followed by Cyprus and Poland at 41% each. Denmark reported the lowest rate in the bloc at 19%, meaning Greece's figure is more than two and a half times higher.
The numbers behind the ranking paint a clear picture of workplace conditions. Fifty-seven percent of Greek workers said they face severe time pressure or work overload, against 44% across the EU. Forty-four percent reported a lack of rewards like pay or career advancement, compared to 34% EU-wide. Verbal abuse from customers, poor internal communication, and harassment rates all came in above European averages as well.
The physical toll is also significant. Forty-four percent of Greek workers reported job-related fatigue and 43% cited headaches or eyestrain, both above EU norms. Despite this, workplace support is thin. Only 28% of Greek workers said their employer offered stress management training, compared to 53% across the EU, and just 26% had access to counseling or psychological support, versus 40% EU-wide.
One of the starkest findings involves digital pressure. Seventy percent of Greek workers said digital tools now dictate the pace of their work, compared to 48% across the EU. That gap is among the widest found anywhere in the survey, suggesting technology is accelerating workloads faster in Greece than almost anywhere else in the bloc.
