Greece's General Secretariat for Religious Affairs released its annual report on attacks against sites of religious importance, covering the full year 2025, and the numbers are stark. Of the 386 recorded incidents, 374 of them, or 96.6%, targeted Christian sites, including break-ins, thefts, vandalism, sacrilege, grave desecrations, and other acts of profanation.
The overwhelming majority of those 374 cases hit the Orthodox Church specifically, accounting for 362 incidents, or 93.78% of the total. Genuine Orthodox Christians (Old Calendarists) had 7 incidents against their sites, Jehovah's Witnesses had 4, and one Anglican site was also targeted.
Judaism accounted for 11 incidents of an antisemitic nature, or 2.85% of the total. Islam recorded just 1 incident, representing 0.26%. The figure for 2025 is actually down from 2024, when 412 incidents were logged, a drop of roughly 6.3%.
According to the report, published on 14 August 2026, more than half of all cases remain unsolved. Authorities closed 47% of incidents with a known perpetrator, but 53% of attackers were never identified.
The scale of the problem stretches back further than a single year. Across the eleven years from 2015 to 2025, the Secretariat has recorded a cumulative total of 4,795 incidents against sites of religious importance in Greece.
