Greek MEP Sotiris Tsiodras called out the EU on Thursday for what he described as selective silence toward Turkey, warning that bloc members who look the other way because of trade ties are undermining the entire concept of European unity.
Speaking before the European Parliament, Tsiodras argued that the EU's eastern borders do not stop at northern Europe. They stretch into southeastern Europe too, and he said revisionism threatening that region comes not only from Russia but from Turkey as well.
He was direct about what Turkey is doing: contesting Greek sovereignty, maintaining a casus belli against Greece, and continuing its occupation of Cypriot territory. Greece, he said, respects international law and serves as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, while Turkey does the opposite.
Tsiodras pushed back on the gap between EU rhetoric and action. European Parliament reports on Turkey's behavior amount to nothing if they produce no real consequences, he said. He argued that violations of any member state's borders or rights must be treated as violations against all of Europe, and the response must match that framing.
His sharpest line came at the end: some EU members are effectively ignoring Turkish provocations because they have business interests with Ankara. He said that as long as that continues, talking about a genuinely united Europe is meaningless. The words only carry weight when they come with real consequences.
