Emmanouil Karalis pulled off another stunning performance in Lausanne on Thursday, clearing 6.16m at the Diamond League meeting to shatter his own Greek outdoor record of 6.08m, set just over a year ago in Volos.
The Greek Olympic medalist and Mondo Duplantis moved in lockstep through the early rounds, both clearing 5.51m, 5.81m, 5.91m, and 6.01m on their first attempts, eliminating every other competitor in the field before the bar even reached 6.16m.
At 6.16m, Duplantis cleared comfortably on his first try. Karalis got it on his second, a new Greek outdoor record and a performance that underlines just how close he has gotten to the top of the sport.
From there, the gap between the two became clear. Duplantis went on to clear 6.21m and took first place with a new meet record. Karalis failed twice at 6.21m and once at 6.26m, finishing in second.
It is worth noting that Karalis still holds the absolute Greek record at 6.17m, set indoors on February 28 of this year. The outdoor mark of 6.16m from Lausanne now stands as his best performance under open-air conditions.
The competition took place in the Ouchy district, on the banks of Lake Geneva, one day ahead of the rest of the Lausanne Diamond League events.
At 6.16m outdoors, Karalis is now operating in territory only Duplantis has consistently owned. The Swedish superstar remains in a class of his own for now, but Thursday's duel showed the margin is narrowing.
