Israel has blocked a group of Greek unionists from entering the country and the occupied Palestinian territories, drawing a sharp response from the Greek Left Alliance, known as ELAS.
ELAS released a statement condemning the decision as a violation of international law and of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which covers human rights obligations. The group compared the entry ban to the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which it described as an act of international piracy.
The organization called on the Greek government to take an immediate public position on the incident and to make clear to the Israeli side the seriousness of such actions. ELAS also demanded that Greece pursue all appropriate formal channels of protest.
ELAS went further by calling on the European Union to move against the Netanyahu government with a concrete framework of action. Specifically, it demanded the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement on the grounds of human rights violations, and targeted sanctions against individuals and entities involved in what it described as unlawful Israeli policy.
The group referenced ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Iran as part of its broader argument for EU-level action. ELAS said the EU-Israel relationship cannot continue without accountability for these actions.
The Greek government has not yet publicly responded to the incident.
