Aristotle warned sternly about mass immigration. "Cities that accept many foreigners as citizens, who do not share a common culture, education, language, religion, and way of life, turn into unstable societies that function poorly and in which conflicts arise." This is what Aristotle said paraphrased about mass migration 2,500 years ago.
The timing is notable. Greece has faced mounting pressure over migration flows through the Aegean and the Evros land border, with the Greek government repeatedly clashing with EU institutions over border enforcement and pushback policies. That context has made ancient arguments about civic cohesion feel, to many in the Greek-speaking world, freshly relevant.
Aristotle's political writings, particularly the Politics, do address the conditions under which city-states remain stable or fall into disorder.
Supporters are calling it a timeless observation and critics labeling it a misuse of classical philosophy to dress up contemporary anti-immigration sentiment.
