On October 11, 1922, Greece lost Eastern Thrace without Turkey ever having to fight for it. The Armistice of Mudanya, signed that day by Britain, France, Italy, and the Ankara government, handed over the entire region through diplomacy, not conquest. Greek military representatives refused to sign at the table, but the Greek government accepted the terms shortly after.
Negotiations had opened on October 3 and nearly collapsed on day three. Turkey demanded immediate handover of the region, which exposed deep fractures between the Allied powers. British Foreign Secretary Lord Curzon rushed to Paris on October 6 and 7 to try to hold a unified Allied position together, while France made clear it would not go to war against Turkey.
Venizelos sent telegrams to the Greek Foreign Ministry during those critical days, according to the Digital Archive of Eleftherios Venizelos. One archived telegram records a dispute over the timeline for restoring Turkish administration, with Curzon reportedly promising a one-month interval after Greek forces withdrew. Greek General Mazarakis was instructed to seek guidance from Athens before agreeing to any evacuation, partial or total, because the government itself did not know exactly what was being discussed at the table.
The armistice gave Greek forces 15 days to evacuate Eastern Thrace under Allied supervision, beginning October 15. Up to 8,000 Turkish gendarmes were permitted to enter the region to support the incoming civilian authorities. The Greek military withdrawal was accompanied by a mass flight of the Greek population, a displacement documented at the time by the U.S. Naval Institute's Proceedings journal.
Turkey gained Eastern Thrace through a signed agreement, not military advance into Europe. The defeat in Asia Minor had now produced consequences on the European side of the Straits as well. A 23-year-old Toronto Star correspondent named Ernest Hemingway was there to witness it.
