Greece has launched DAIDALOS, its most powerful supercomputer ever, ranking 31st on the TOP500 global list of the world's most powerful computing systems and 23rd on the Green500 list for energy efficiency. The machine delivers 85.69 petaflops of measured computing performance, a figure that puts it among the most capable systems on the planet. It was built on Hewlett Packard Enterprise architecture using NVIDIA GH200 accelerators and direct liquid cooling technology. DAIDALOS is housed in a new data center inside the historic former power station building at the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park, operated by the National Technical University of Athens. The facility runs on renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems designed to keep energy consumption down. The project was implemented by the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology, known as GRNET, with a total budget of 58.9 million euros. Funding came through Greece's Recovery and Resilience Plan, Greece 2.0, backed by the EU's NextGenerationEU program and the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking. Universities, research centers, startups, small businesses, and public sector bodies will all have access to DAIDALOS for scientific simulations, large-scale data processing, and AI model training. The system will also serve as the computing backbone of PHAROS, Greece's national AI Factory, which aims to support AI development across the public sector, research community, and industry. Greece joins other European nations operating EuroHPC systems, sitting alongside JUPITER, LUMI, Leonardo, and MareNostrum in the rankings. The system is expected to become fully operational before the end of 2026. #Greece #Technology #AI
