Protesters marched on the U.S. Embassy in Athens Tuesday evening, burning American and NATO flags during demonstrations against Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Greece.
Student associations, labor unions, trade organizations, and political parties gathered from around 8 p.m. at Propylaea in central Athens before moving toward the embassy. Demonstrators chanted slogans against American foreign policy, including calling Rubio "unwanted" and "the butcher Rubio."
Protests also broke out simultaneously in Thessaloniki, where two separate groups converged. Student organizations gathered near the Venizelos statue while a second crowd, including anarchist groups and Palestinian activists, assembled at Kamara before marching to the American Consulate.
Athens traffic authorities implemented road closures and diversions across major central arteries for the duration of the demonstrations, affecting Syntagma Square and key boulevards including Vasilissis Sofias, Vasileos Konstantinou, and Vasilissis Amalias. A heavy police presence was maintained throughout both cities.
Rubio's visit to Greece prompted the security measures independently of the protests, with traffic restrictions tied to both his official program and the demonstrations.
