A wildfire raging in Boeotia for a second consecutive day has burned between 40,000 and 50,000 stremmata of land, roughly 50,000 acres, according to fire meteorologist Thodoris Giannaros, who posted satellite-based estimates on Facebook Saturday. The fire started north of Agios Vasileios and shows no signs of stopping. Giannaros described the scale of destruction as "incomprehensible," writing that the burned area appears to exceed 40,000 to 50,000 stremmata and adding simply, "There are no words." Satellite images captured by the EUMETSAT Meteosat-12 satellite and processed by the National Observatory of Athens through meteo.gr show smoke from the Boeotia fire, along with separate fires in Attica and the Argolid, traveling more than 750 kilometers across the Mediterranean. By Saturday morning, the smoke plume had blanketed large parts of the eastern and southern Peloponnese and reached the coastline of North Africa. The fire in western Attica near Porto Germeno was still active through the night on Friday into Saturday, contributing to the massive smoke coverage captured in the satellite imagery. Multiple fires burning simultaneously across central and southern Greece have created one of the most visible wildfire events of the summer season so far. Greece has faced extreme fire conditions throughout recent summers, with strong seasonal winds and prolonged dry spells turning large stretches of forest and scrubland into tinder.
