Mount Olympus was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on Sunday, with the decision made unanimously at the 48th World Heritage Committee session in Busan, South Korea. The inscription caps a process that began in 2012 and saw Greece submit its full nomination file in 2023. Greece now holds 21 UNESCO World Heritage entries. Olympus was listed as a "Mixed Property," meaning it received recognition for both its cultural and natural value simultaneously. Mixed listings are rare, making up a small fraction of the total UNESCO catalogue. The other two Greek sites with this designation are Meteora and Mount Athos. On the cultural side, UNESCO approved criterion (vi), recognizing the mountain's direct connection to events, ideas, and traditions of universal significance. Through the works of Homer and Hesiod, Olympus became the home of the twelve Olympian gods in ancient Greek and Roman belief, a mythological identity that has shaped literature, philosophy, the visual arts, and popular culture worldwide ever since. Archaeological remains of an open-air sanctuary to Zeus have been found at the summit of Agios Antonios, while the ancient city of Dion at the mountain's base holds temples, altars, inscriptions, and ritual sites tied to that tradition. On the natural side, UNESCO approved criterion (x) for biodiversity. Standing at 2,918 meters, Olympus hosts 1,983 plant taxa, more than 25 percent of all Greek flora, along with high concentrations of species found nowhere else on earth. It also shelters brown bears, chamois, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. The UNESCO listing does not transfer ownership or management of the site to any international body.
