Christopher Nolan's Odyssey, set for release this July, has become the most controversial film of 2026 before a single ticket has been sold. The adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic stars Matt Damon, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Tom Holland, Travis Scott, and Elliot Page, and has drawn fierce criticism from almost every corner of the political spectrum.
The casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy sparked the loudest backlash. Homer describes Helen as "white-armed," and commentators including right-wing blogger Matt Walsh and Elon Musk publicly argued the choice was driven by Nolan's fear of being called racist. Scholar Daniel Mendelsohn, whose own translation of the Odyssey was published last year, pushed back at the Hay Festival in May, pointing out that Helen has the smallest role in the Odyssey and calling the debate "particularly foolish." Mendelsohn added that casting Nyong'o, whom he called a "very beautiful actress," actually places the film "right at the center of a very old conversation" about how beauty is defined in the Trojan myth.
The controversy spread beyond casting. Nolan also hired trans actor Elliot Page and rapper Travis Scott, drawing criticism from audiences who felt the choices leaned too far into modern progressive politics. Nyong'o responded briefly in Elle magazine, saying the cast "represents the world."
Greek voices joined the debate as well, but from a different angle. Greek-British journalist Chris Koutonou wrote in The Guardian that Greeks had been "left out of Hollywood, once again and without any explanation, from the fundamental mythologies and epics that are ours." Professor Susan Deacy, author of The Greek Gods and Their Worlds, told the BBC that the Odyssey has been reimagined continuously throughout history, with nearly every era producing its own Homer.
The first trailer also drew mockery for its American accents and modern dialogue, with Tom Holland drawing particular attention for delivering lines in his Spider-Man voice rather than the formal British accent Hollywood typically uses for ancient settings.
