Ten years after their son was stabbed to death in Ayia Napa, Helen and Martyn Low are still waiting for anyone to face trial. George Low, a 22-year-old estate agent from Dartford, was stabbed twice outside Bell's pub on the Ayia Napa strip on August 14, 2016. His friend Ben Barker was also stabbed multiple times but survived. George did not. International arrest warrants were issued for Sali Ahmet and Mehmet Akpinar, who are believed to have fled into the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus before traveling to Turkey. A decade later, neither man has been brought to court. Helen Low told To Vima she never imagined justice could remain this far out of reach. She said they were warned early on it would be a slow process, but no one ever suggested it would take ten years. The family has been clear about why no trial has happened. Helen put it plainly: politics is more important than life. Because of the political situation in Cyprus and Turkey's refusal to extradite its own, the suspects remain beyond the reach of the law. George's parents describe a young man who lit up every room he walked into. He was funny, warm, and had ambitions to start his own business in property. His father Martyn spent a week with him in Ayia Napa shortly before his death, a memory he says he will never forget. Helen still struggles to describe the moment she found out. Her son Wesley woke her in the middle of the night, and his first words were "It's George, Mum." She asked if he was okay. He told her George had died. She said she refused to believe it.
