At least 21 people are dead after a makeshift boat carrying Afghan migrants capsized off the northern coast of Lesbos, with six others still missing and feared drowned. The group set sail from the western coast of Turkey on Thursday night, carrying men, women, and children, before bad weather sank the vessel roughly two miles from the island's shore. All 21 bodies, all male, were recovered from Thermi beach on the island's northern coast. Greek public television reported that two women and two children were also among those on board. The only known survivor, a 20-year-old man, was pulled from the water and hospitalized in Mytilene. He told investigators everyone on the boat was from Afghanistan. Lesbos police continued searching for the six still unaccounted for as of Sunday. The island sits close to the Turkish mainland and has long been one of the main entry points for migrants attempting to reach Western Europe through Greece. Migrants frequently attempt the Aegean crossing in overloaded, unseaworthy vessels, and winter conditions make the passage especially deadly.
