Nathan Cofnas, the philosopher who was among the first to publicly flag plagiarism allegations against Cambridge professor Jason Arday, has been suspended by Ghent University and told he will almost certainly be fired. Cofnas announced the suspension on X on Wednesday, August 20, noting the decision was made by rector Petra De Sutter, a former leader of Belgium's Green Party. Ghent University confirmed the suspension shortly after, saying Arday's death "should give us cause for reflection" and that the institution "opposes discrimination, hatred, and racism." The university added that while it supports academic freedom and open dialogue, "this freedom is not unlimited" and must go hand in hand "with responsibility." In a joint statement, rector De Sutter and vice-rector Herwig Reinert said Ghent University "supports respect for human dignity and opposes discrimination, hatred, and racism." The university has not specified which of Cofnas's statements or actions triggered the suspension. Jason Arday, Cambridge's youngest-ever Black professor, was found dead last Friday after weeks of intense public scrutiny over plagiarism allegations. Arday had denied the plagiarism charges but had acknowledged making errors in his work. The suspension of the person who raised the plagiarism concerns, coming days after Arday's death, has drawn immediate attention over whether universities are punishing academics for raising legitimate scholarly misconduct issues. #JasonArday #AcademicFreedom #GhentUniversity
