A Greek F-16 from the Hellenic Air Force's Zeus Demonstration Team flew over Thessaloniki on Monday afternoon in a test flight ahead of the October 28 national anniversary celebrations. For the first time, the upgraded fighter jet passed directly above the Hellenic Navy's flagship frigate Kimon, which has been docked at Thessaloniki's port for several days.
Residents watching from the city got to see two of Greece's most significant military assets in the same frame at once, the air force's frontline fighter and the navy's modern frigate. It was the first time an upgraded F-16 had flown over the Kimon.
The F-16 remains the backbone of Greece's air defense over the Aegean, where Hellenic Air Force jets carry out regular interceptions to push back Turkish fighters, drones, and reconnaissance aircraft attempting to enter Greek airspace. The display comes days before Greece marks Oxi Day on October 28, the national anniversary commemorating Greece's refusal to submit to Axis occupation in 1940.
The Kimon has been anchored at the port for several days, drawing visitors ahead of the celebrations. Monday's flight gave Thessaloniki residents a preview of what the full anniversary display will bring.
