Two helicopter pilots died Sunday while fighting wildfires in Attica, Greece, after two rented Bell helicopters collided near Psatha. The two pilots, one Danish and one Greek, were pulled unconscious from the wreckage and rushed by ambulance to hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The other two occupants, who were aboard the first helicopter, were found and rescued alive. The crash comes just days after three firefighters were killed battling fires in Rethymno and Gytheio, bringing the total death toll from Greece's wildfire season to five in five days. Thick smoke blanketed the skies over Attica on Sunday, with the fires still burning across multiple fronts. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the coordination center to receive updates on the situation. In his weekly post Sunday morning, he acknowledged that conditions have tested the limits of the fire service, civil protection, local government, and citizens themselves. Government sources said discussions at the coordination center included anti-erosion works to begin immediately in affected areas, as well as damage assessment through the State Relief agency. President Konstantinos Tassoulas also visited the Fire Service Coordination Center, where he was briefed by the fire service chief and Civil Protection Minister Evangelos Tournas. Opposition parties expressed condolences but quickly turned to sharp criticism of the government's handling of the crisis.
