Madonna is calling Patmos one of the most spiritual places she has ever visited. The pop icon posted a series of photos from the Greek island this week, writing that she "truly felt the presence of God there" and describing it as a "magical" place that moved her deeply.
The trip carries personal significance. The first time Madonna visited Greece, she was seven months pregnant with her oldest son Rocco Ritchie. Now 26, Rocco joined his mother on the island this August, and Madonna called the return a "full circle moment," saying the experience was good for the soul.
The photos she shared on Instagram show the pair at sunset, set up for a beach picnic with beers in hand, both dressed sharply enough to pass for a fashion shoot. Separate images show Madonna inside a church with her hair covered, lighting candles and holding a church book, with icons of the Virgin Mary visible behind her. She also visited the Cave of the Apocalypse, the sacred site where St. John is said to have written the Book of Revelation.
The Patmos leg came toward the end of a broader Greek holiday. Madonna had already celebrated her 68th birthday in Corfu, with music, dancing, and traditional food, and made a stop at Meteora before heading to the island.
Rocco turned 26 on August 11, just days before his mother's own birthday on August 16, making the trip a joint celebration. Madonna paid tribute to him publicly, calling life with him "one adventure after the next."
Patmos, one of the Dodecanese islands in the eastern Aegean, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Orthodox Christianity. Madonna's visit and her open words about feeling God's presence there are drawing wide attention to the island.
